    Boro-aluminising of P91 steel by pack cementation for protection against steam oxidation

    High performance alloys are often the materials used for various components exposed to high temperature environments. In many cases, protective coatings are applied in these alloys, providing higher corrosion and oxidation resistance, compared to the base material. This study investigates the feasibility to apply boro-aluminising treatment on P91 steel by pack cementation process, to increase the steel high temperature properties in oxidising and corrosive environments. Packs activated by AlCl₃, NH₄Cl and KBF₄ were used to carry out the coating deposition at a temperature of 715°C for 6 h. The coating formed was analysed by means of SEM and XRD, and the compounds formed were identified. Cyclic steam oxidation for a total of 1008 h at 650°C revealed an oxide scale of 50 mum for the uncoated P91 steel, while the coated steel shows practically no oxidation effect.Publicad

    Inventory of alien marine species of Cyprus (2009)

    An updated inventory of alien marine species from coastal and offshore waters of Cyprus is presented. Records were compiled based on the existing scientific and grey literature, including HCMR database of Mediterranean alien species, technical reports, scientific congresses, academic dissertations, and websites, as well as on unpublished/personal observations. The listed species were classified in one of five categories: established, invasive, casual, cryptogenic, and questionable. The mode of introduction and the year of first sighting were also reported for each species. Eight new records based on personal observations of the authors were reported (Chondria coerulescens, Neosiphonia sphaerocarpa, Enchelycore anatina, Lagocephalus spadiceus, Lagocephalus suezensis, Scomberomorus commerson, Sillago sihama, and Sphoeroides pachygaster). Nine species, previously reported as aliens in Cypriot waters, were excluded from the inventory for various reasons. Ten established species were characterized as invasive (Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea, Cerithium scabridum, Strombus persicus, Trochus erythraeus, Brachidontes pharaonis, Pinctada radiata, Fistularia commersonii, Lagocephalus sceleratus, Siganus luridus, and Siganus rivulatus) as they have a substantial impact on biodiversity and/or local economy. The impact of alien marine species in Cyprus is expected to grow in the close future, and further effort directed towards recording alien invasions and their impact will be needed

    Introducing a level-set based shape and topology optimization method for the wear of composite materials with geometric constraints

    International audienceThe wear of materials continues to be a limiting factor in the lifetime and performance of mechanical systems with sliding surfaces. As the demand for low wear materials grows so does the need for models and methods to systematically optimize tribological systems. Elastic foundation models offer a simplified framework to study the wear of multimaterial composites subject to abrasive sliding. Previously, the evolving wear profile has been shown to converge to a steady-state that is characterized by a time-independent elliptic equation. In this article, the steady-state formulation is generalized and integrated with shape optimization to improve the wear performance of bi-material composites. Both macroscopic structures and periodic material microstructures are considered. Several common tribological objectives for systems undergoing wear are identified and mathematically formalized with shape derivatives. These include (i) achieving a planar wear surface from multimaterial composites and (ii) minimizing the run-in volume of material lost before steady-state wear is achieved. A level-set based topology optimization algorithm that incorporates a novel constraint on the level-set function is presented. In particular, a new scheme is developed to update material interfaces ; the scheme (i) conveniently enforces volume constraints at each iteration, (ii) controls the complexity of design features using perimeter penalization, and (iii) nucleates holes or inclusions with the topological gradient. The broad applicability of the proposed formulation for problems beyond wear is discussed, especially for problems where convenient control of the complexity of geometric features is desired

    The use of dolomite as foaming agent and its effect on the microstructure of aluminium metal foams—Comparison to titanium hydride

Borovets, Bulgaria, 14-16 July 2010.In this paper dolomite MgCa(CO₃)₂ a naturally occurring mineral was demonstrated to be an effective foaming and stabilizing agent for aluminium with several notable advantages relative to the currently used titanium hydride foaming agent. Characteristic cell structures and microstructural features of foams produced with a dolomite foaming agent are examined and the properties of dolomite based foams produced in a one step process are compared with those produced using titanium hydride based process. The most notable structural feature of dolomite based foams is a smaller cell size and thinner cell faces. Foaming with MgCa(CO₃)₂ also gives rise to a marked increase in the stability of molten foams with a large range of foaming temperatures possible, and an almost complete absence of melt drainage even with extended foaming times. Many of these properties are attributed to the cell surfaces being covered by a thin oxide film formed during the foaming process.Publicad

    Green synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles produced using 'Arbutus Unedo' leaf extract

    Metallic nanoparticles have received great attention from chemists, physicists, biologists and engineers who wish to use them for the development of a new generation of nanodevices. In the present study silver nanoparticles were synthesized from aqueous silver nitrate through a simple and eco-friendly route using leaf broth of Arbutus unedo, which acted as a reductant and stabilizer simultaneously. The aqueous silver ions when exposed to the leaf broth were reduced and stabilized over long periods of time resulting in the green synthesis of surface functionalized silver nanoparticles. The bio-reduced silver nanoparticles were appropriately characterized. The results revealed the formation of single crystalline Ag nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution for each sample. The particles, although discrete, were predominately coated with the organic leaf extract forming small aggregates, which makes them stable over long time periods and highly appropriate for coatings or biotechnology applications.Publicad

    Flow, thermal and structural application of Ni-foam as volumetric solar receiver

    Open-cell nickel foams with 92% porosity and uniform pore size and distribution were used in this study. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the behaviour of Ni-foam, when treated as volumetric receivers under concentrated solar radiation while improving their oxidation resistance, in order to make them attractive for such applications. The experimental investigation showed that their efficiency was depending on both materials parameters and flow conditions, the latter affecting the pressure drop and the heat transfer behaviour. The microstructural characterisation of oxide surface morphologies formed on the open-cell Ni foams exposed to concentrated solar radiation is investigated by the use of SEM and EDXS. SEM observations revealed a rapid homogeneous oxidation in the Ni-foam with three different surface oxide structures formed in relation with the process temperature. A novel slurry-based process for aluminising nickel foams while retaining their geometrical properties is applied in order to develop an aluminide-nickel intermetallic coating on a Ni foam thus enhancing the oxidation resistance.     Visualization of positive and negative sense viral RNA for probing the mechanism of direct-acting antivirals against hepatitis C virus

    RNA viruses are highly successful pathogens and are the causative agents for many important diseases. To fully understand the replication of these viruses it is necessary to address the roles of both positive-strand RNA ((+)RNA) and negative-strand RNA ((-)RNA), and their interplay with viral and host proteins. Here we used branched DNA (bDNA) fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to stain both the abundant (+)RNA and the far less abundant (-)RNA in both hepatitis C virus (HCV)- and Zika virus-infected cells, and combined these analyses with visualization of viral proteins through confocal imaging. We were able to phenotypically examine HCV-infected cells in the presence of uninfected cells and revealed the effect of direct-acting antivirals on HCV (+)RNA, (-)RNA, and protein, within hours of commencing treatment. Herein, we demonstrate that bDNA FISH is a powerful tool for the study of RNA viruses that can provide insights into drug efficacy and mechanism of action
